| A wide range of very unique and recognisable wines |
Apulia is a long and narrow region, with diverse geo-morphological features which make it very interesting in terms of agricultural biodiversity. The Regional Agricultural and Food Resources Department is investing a lot in this diversity which we will discover in the four territories described in the following pages – Daunia, Murgia, Messapia and Valle d’Itria, and Salento. In terms of wine production, this diversity translates into a wide range of very unique and recognisable wines.
Wine-growing in Apulia dates back to antiquity: Apulian wine was already well-known on the dinner tables of Ancient Rome, as we see from the writings of Tibullus, Pliny the Elder and Horace. For this reason, the valorisation of Apulian wine-growing necessarily meant a return to the past, involving the rediscovery and promotion of native grape varieties. These grapes produce wines with an excellent structure and quality, thanks to a combination of research work, promotion by local authorities and the dedication and investments of local growers. The effect is to make Apulia one of the most interesting regions in the panorama of Italian wine production.
