| Apulian wines: postcards of our region |
The aim of Unioncamere Puglia in its promotion of Apulian wines - carried out in perfect synergy with the Regional Department of Agriculture and Food Resources - is to reinforce the feeling of belonging and create a common value based around our products:, There are so many wines in Apulia of outstanding quality which carry the imprint of the colours, shades and smells of our land. Like postcards they represent the traditions of the Apulian farmers and wine-growers so well, and their ability to make use of the innate natural, environmental, architectural and historical talents of their communities.
Everybody is talking about the quality of Apulian wines. But it is important to know which way to turn. Hence this venture to accompany readers and visitors on a journey through an age-old tradition which is being re-invented – a tradition with a very strong identity and symbolic value. The hard work and commitment to bottling and labelling which we have seen in recent years will surely continue to give us a lot of satisfaction. The direction this Mediterranean region must follow for the future is that of promoting our typical regional products.
Research and innovation – the aims of the Department.
PRIMITIVO DI GIOIA
According to tradition, Primitivo was planted first near Gioia del Colle in the Province of Bari by the Benedictine monks. Towards the end of the 1700s, the priest Don Filippo Francesco Indellicati selected a clone and called it “Primitivo” because it ripened early. This variety then found ideal growing conditions around Manduria in the Province of Taranto, and became a world ambassador for Apulian wines.
